BBC

Sarah Muller
-CBBC head of animation
-largest channel, number of kids that watch it
-closest competitor is CITV
-196.4 million player requests
-Becoming about brands
-strange hill high-made in house-where cbbc wants to be
-danger mouse is coming back. it was done on the cheep before but people still like it because of the relationship between the characters so they believe if they get that right people won't mind it coming back a bit modern.
-canadian animation has stuck in the 80's cartoon network style and they haven't changed it they are just churning out for profit
-looking for laugh out loud comedy animation 6-9 year olds
-character driven-like sponge bob
-Has to stand out, something new that no ones seen yet.
-avoid-zombies and vampires and paranormal things as they are being over done,
-they'd like to get something like family guy, simpsons, futurama, recognisable family drama,  real looking backgrounds, so they can do this kind of thing but age appropriately.
-fit with existing shows
-kids like seeing naughty people cause there not aloud to be naughty so they like to watch it.
-dennis the mennis- more dog-trying to make him less naughty but losing the story-no life is being brought into it.
-get kids talking
-pre school stuff, you have to be careful what you do because of emotive behaviour. don't make something where the character does something that you wouldn't want a pre schooler to do.
-think there is room for dramatic animation-if its brilliant

Andrew borough
-Writing CBBC animation
-boys predominantly are interested in animation for longer. girls are interested in it at a younger age
-Dont do fighting stuff on cbbc
-Premise-could this be told in any other medium? why is it animation?
-characters gotta have flaws to make stories- scooby and shaggy-cowards
-your world-the weirder the world-the simpler the story e.g. adventure time
-story telling- 3 act structure, character driven, coherent within the rules of the world, weirder the world simpler he story, follow the character and the story. don't blindly pressure the gag.
-pace- fast pace energetic, smash cuts, in and out scenes ultra fast 1/2 or 1 page max
-no guns, knives, no punching in the face, no cynicism
-Visual style anything goes, whatever works for the story
-crazy story-lots of squash and stretch
-writers conferences- eat biscuits, talk shit. ramble on about ideas
-springboards- paragraph length ideas for stories- throw stuff at a wall and see what sticks-
-Premise/outline 2 1/2 or 3 page story to see if it works
-Scene by scene- script with minimal dialogue to see if it will work
-Drafts- write the full script,
-ask another writer to polish the scripts, maybe make it more funny, bounce back and forth between the two.
-notes- these people have experience so listen to them- good notes help make it better
-writing isn't rocket science its harder
-whos story is it?
-what do they want?
-what obstacles can we put in their way?
-what do they learn?
-audience?
-If it feels right then you made the right choice
-Need a script to pitch to CBBC

Big hero 6

I went to watch Big Hero 6 on Friday. It was awesome!! I just love Baymax!! He's just so squishy and loveable and very literal almost to the point of being thick but thats because he's a robot!I love the idea of the chips he has in him to make his personality and when you take out the human kind of chip that makes him want to care for people, all he knows is karate!
I also really like the girl second from the left. I love the way she moves and how she chews her gum, it is actually a really realistic movement! I really enjoyed this movie and it makes me want to learn more 3D animation! I just really wish i knew how to make my own characters and rig them!

idea

i want to do an animation of the story of how the bat became a nocturnal animal
basically the (mexican) bat is really jelous of the other birds because they have pretty feathers and he is just brown and black and fury. he goes to kelly coacle and asks him to make the other birds give him one of his feathers so he can be a bat bird. when he got to the eagle, the eagle gave him a little feather but the bat wanted a big feather so he kept asking and asking until the eagle got very angry and shook him and all the bats new feathers fell off. so he goes back to kelly coacle and says its not fair the eagle shook me tell the birds to give me another feather! kelly coacle said no cos what if you loose those feathers too and then again and again all the birds will be naked! so the bat flew away and tried to find a cave so none would see that he lost his feathers because birds will ask what happened. so he decided if he only goes out at night none would ask. then he realised at night it doesn't matter what colour you are because none could see!!!

Night and day

I found this disney short and I just thought it was brilliant. Such a clever idea! I love how not only is the image inside the character but when they walk about the background stays still like they are walking about on it. This means the characters can interact together and take turns at looking at stuff. I think its nice that they became friends at the end and then something happened and they switched times! I thought that was such a lovely idea! And they both looked so happy at the end! I also like they character designs how they're all squishy and cute! It's such a simple idea but is so effective!!!

Lee Hardcastle

We had a visit from Lee Hardcastle! I was looking forward to this! Unfortunately he came in a bit unprepared and unprofessional. But actually his talk was really fun and engaging and told us a lot of interesting things!
Basically he first started stop motion when he was at film school. He didn't want to work in teams as he wasn't a very confident person. So he asked his tutor if he could just work on his own on a stop motion and they said yes! So he got some action figures and made a short movie with them! He showed us it and it was actually really good and funny! It was obvious he studies film because of the good use of lighting and shot framing etc.
He went through with us where he went from there showing us pretty much all of his animations. He was explaining to us that we need to enter competitions lots and lots and chances are you'll only win 1 in 100 but you need to do it to get your work seen and practice. Share your work everywhere too so that more people are likely to see it. Lee has gotten work from his videos because people liked them so much that they asked him to do some work for them!
He also told us about how you make money from youtube. Apparently it used to be a lot easier for him because the way the site was set up was that short videos got put down the side as suggestions so his videos would often get listed. He even told us he made silly videos like 'the best alien encounter ever' (or something along those lines) just so people would be intrigued and watch them and from that he would make money! These actually strangely became his most successful videos. However now he says this has changed and the longer videos are getting suggested which isn't what he does so youtube is no longer useful to him.
I did really enjoy having Lee Hardcastle talk to us about what he is done but I don't really feel its relevant to me as i am not into creating gory things and also I am more interested in the movement and making it look realistic and that is not what Lee Hardcastles work is about.

Rebecca Caputo

Rebecca came in to talk to us about what she does. She likes to use inanimate objects and puppeteer them. To start with she put some music on and played with a bag and animated it and to be honest with you I thought she was a little crazy. But then she told us about her background being in theatre so she is a performer but she wanted to perform through puppets. Then she brought out her puppets. They were in a bit of a creepy style but they were actually pretty cool. I liked how she had used mix media like wood and silicon and i particularly liked how she made one of their mouths move with a peg!!
After she had shown us what she does she asked if we wanted to have a go. We all got a piece of newspaper and we had to screw it up and find its face and its eye line. This felt really weird and silly to start with but after we got into it it was quite fun! Our animals started interacting with each other!
I don't think this was of much relevance to me because I am not really interested in puppetry but a couple of things she did say was- Breathing brings the character to life. you have create the illusion of breathing and then you will automatically feel like it is alive. I think that is really good advice for animation as well. Also she said the eye line is really important as this is what makes the character believable. If the character is interacting with an object or someone then it needs to be looking at it!
